Founded by Author and Spoken Word Artist Fehmida Master, our Publishing Director & Editor in Chief established Master House Publishing after being offered a traditional book publishing deal by a mainstream publisher, which, after a lot of thoughtful consideration and soul searching, she ultimately decided to branch out and go it alone.
'It was on the back of a lot of social injustice that was being highlighted through the Black Lives Matter movement that I realised that many people and organisations were jumping on the bandwagon and offering Authors of Black, Brown and marginalised backgrounds first pick almost with submission calls. However when you start to really look at many of these opportunities, and the history of those publishing houses that have actively in the past encouraged writers & poets of colour, and their portfolios, there were few to none. You then actually realise that there is a very fine line between genuinely wanting to lift and amplify voices of colour and simply using the movement to tap into markets for a quick buck.'
'Of course there is always room for growth for these publishers and educating to move forward in a more inclusive way, however when you look into it a little deeper, the royalties to authors remained the same-or even less. In fact when I researched, some authors were being offered very little compared to what the CEO's - who were mostly always white, something a quick google search will show - would be making off the back of the Author of Colour.'
'It's pretty much like the meme I saw doing the rounds on social media about supporting local business. I thought I would sooner the extra 50p-£1 difference in royalties go to the Author of Colour to help pay for their kids education and extra curricular activities than it go to the large CEO's to help fund their second holiday home.'
'Another area that was lacking was accessible editorial services. So often marginalised authors would be priced out and unless you knew somebody who knew somebody, you would struggle to find quality editorial services that are affordable. But more importantly, edited by someone with an understanding of your unique vernacular'.
'It was a no brainer really, and then after some more research and a lot of learning, Master House Publishing was born. Entirely self funded with a mission and vision to empower, strengthen and amplify as many voices of women and voices of colour as possible.'
